Our organic winery tour around Bologna starts with Lambrusco

We will meet in Bologna and head towards Modena, where we will discover a rising star in the international wine scene. In fact, this multi-generation business is now considered among the best Lambrusco producers. Located in Bomporto, Cantina della Volta vinifies Lambrusco di Sorbara in purity. Of all the Lambrusco varieties, Sorbara is the one with the lightest color. For this reason, it gives rosé wines. Furthermore, its freshness and acidity make it particularly suitable for sparkling wine.

The business was started by great-grandfather Francesco Bellei in 1920 and later inherited by his father Giuseppe, who ran the family winery until the end of the nineties. In 2010 his son Christian Bellei restarted the company with a group of friends, focusing on the production of very high-quality wines. In fact, he pursued the classic method of fermentation in the bottle. Thanks to his vision and persistence Lambrusco, which used to be associated with cheap and popular wine, is enjoying a comeback in the international scene.

Time for a scenic drive on the hills to Pignoletto

This organic winery tour around Bologna continues onto Pignoletto. In fact, we will visit Azienda Agrobiologica Oro di Diamanti, and taste their white grape variety. Pignoletto is an iconic wine of this area, for a reason. In fact, it goes well with the cold cuts and first courses of the rich local cuisine, tortellini, and lasagne, for instance. The sparkling version goes particularly well with these hearty meals, as it reaches high levels of persistence.

Hamlet city of Dozza: street art and regional winery

Finally, this organic winery tour around Bologna will take us to the small town of Dozza. This hamlet is among the most beautiful villages in Italy ( I Borghi più Belli d’ Italia) and it is also home to the Regional Winery.

In Dozza, art becomes is literally part of the urban landscape. In the medieval village of Dozza, graffiti decorate almost every house. Street art is taken seriously here and new artists keep adding to it by taking part in a contest every year. In fact, this town has become an open-air museum, showcasing over a hundred works by prestigious names in contemporary art.

At the regional wine shop, I will talk you through the wines that are the best expression of the territory, including some rising international stars. L’Albana is one of my favorites. It was the first wine to be recognized with DOCG certification in Italy and is vinified in various ways, from the most famous “passito” to the “still dry” version. The latter adds character to white wines; are you ready to discover its tannins with me?

We will then move onto Sangiovese and learn the story behind “Modigliana Stella dell’Appennino”. In fact, a group of united winemakers pioneered the evolution of this wine. Their variety has abandoned the fruity and full scents of the clay of the lower Apennines in favor of more “vertical” and savory wines, reflecting the high hills sandstone. Finally, these wines are very well.

Our organic winery tour around Bologna has come to an end, I hope you will remember the stories behind these wines and the people who make it happen!
